And The Winner Is...
The "Milken Educator Award," considered nation-wide to be the Academy Award of teaching, was awarded on Wednesday to a South Philadelphia, 5th grade Science and Math teacher. Given annually to a total of thirty-five teachers throughout the country, twenty-nine year old, Jayda Pugliese, who teaches at Andrew Jackson Elementary School, assumed that morning she was taking her class to just another weekly assembly.
Instead, the gathering was in her honor! Ms. Pugliese stood on stage with Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Philadelphia School District Superintendent William R. Hite, Jr., PA Education Secretary Pedro A. Rivera, and Lowell Milken, cofounder of the Milken Family Foundation. Ms. Pugliese was presented with a check for $25,000 which she plans to use to complete her doctoral degree.
Congratulations, Ms. Pugliese!
