Looking for Great Holiday Reads?

I hope you're checking out, and enjoying, the great reads that are available this season! Today's features are "A Heart for the Holiday" and a great bundle, "Season of Surprises."

A Heart for the Holiday
by Dana Volney

Silver Morgenstern had a thriving, meaningful career as a surgeon working for charity organizations in war-torn countries. Then her life changed with one flick of the wrist. Now she's back in Wyoming, serving as an administrator at the local hospital. But shuffling paperwork is nothing compared to saving lives.

Five years ago, Fisher Tibbs founded the successful social program Combat Children's Hunger. Giving back to kids brings a sparkle to his eye, especially after the loss of his own young daughter, but it can't mend the very real fissure in his heart. Ready to see his child again, he's preparing and planning a future for CCH that he won't get to witness.

But when Fisher's application to be removed from the heart transplant list comes across Silver's desk, her next mission is clear: convince him life is worth the fight. But she never expects that the struggle to rescue his heart might just save her own.

Great Reads on Historic Philadelphia

Frequent visitors to this blog are aware of how much I enjoy walking through the historical district of my city, Philadelphia. Not only is the walk a physical benefit, but helps me through the old dilemma of "writer's block."

Last June, I attended "Fete Day" on Elfreth's Alley in Philadelphia's Olde City district. Designated a national historical site in 1966, Elfreth's Alley is our nation's oldest residential street. Each year on "Fete Day," the current residents living in these homes hold a block party with music, crafts, food, and colonial games.

Author, and History Professor, George W, Boudreau was available for a "meet and greet," and to sign copies of his book. Independence: A Guide to Historic Philadelphia. Although I missed meeting Professor Boudreau, I picked up his book, start thumbing through it, and could not put it down. When I was finished reading, I began searching for other books highlighting historic Philadelphia.

If you're interested in some interesting reads on our nation's background, check out these books.

Independence: A Guide to Historic Philadelphia
by George W. Boudreau

From William Penn's first footsteps on Philadelphia soil, this book tells the stories of those early years and how our nation came to be. Filled with wonderful photographs and exhaustive research, reading this book was like watching CNN during the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution.  I loved this book and talked about it all summer.

Wicked Philadelphia: Sin in the City of Brotherly Love
by Thomas H. Keels

The "naughty" of those early days in Philly. Tales of grave robbers, brothels, and scams in the City of Brotherly Love. There were times, while reading, when I laughed, and others when I cringed. Either way, a great -- and interesting -- read.

Barnes & Noble

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Walking Tours
of  Historic Philadelphia
by Edward Colimore

The Philadelphia Inquirer is our local newspaper. This book is an indispensable read for visitors to Philadelphia, history buffs, and for anyone who loves a good story. Follow the footsteps of those who walked our sidewalks in the early days, take a tour of the historical sites, and learn about Philadelphia's part in our nation's upbringing.

Not only are these books interesting reads, but a helpful reference for any author who is considering writing a historical romance set in Philadelphia. Have a great week, Everyone!

"Thank you, Veterans!"

There are few greater sacrifices one could make than to leave his/her family, go off to a strange country, and make it their mission to keep those of us who live at home safe.

Two simple words mean a lot to folks who deserve to hear them. So, not only on November 11th, but any day you happen to pass one of our military members, please don’t forget to say those two words. The words, “thank you.”

My Uncle Al, my mother's brother who passed away three years ago, served in World War II. He never forgot how lucky he was to not only return home to my mother and grandmother, but to be able to marry and start a family of his own. Along with his trade as a carpenter, Uncle Al spent his entire post-war years volunteering with his local VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). I remember my uncle collecting supplies disabled veterans needed, coordinating appeals to send items to our military personnel currently serving, and driving veterans who were unable to drive themselves to their doctor appointments.

Toward the end of his life, Uncle Al became a resident in a VA nursing home. He was still helping other veterans by reading the newspaper to those who no longer could.

If you would like to help our veterans, I've posted several websites for information.

Paralyzed Veterans of America

Disabled America Veterans

Wounded Warrior Project

The Veterans Site

Veterans Multi-Service Center

USO (United Service Organization)

A huge thank you to our Veterans, and God bless you!

What's New in Children's Books?

Although my niche is writing adult romance novels, I enjoy browsing the children's section at a bookstore and library. Reading is so important to a child's development and future academic success in school. Plus, I have lots of little ones in my family, and I love watching their enthusiasm for a book during story time.

For all of you who appreciate children's literature as much as I do, here are some "fun" recent releases.

Charming picture book about the day in the life of a pill bug in suburbia is also about an unusual friendship.

Happiness is Autumn!

Autumn or "Fall" is my favorite time of year. The weather is generally cool and crisp, and there are lots of activities to enjoy. One afternoon this week, while strolling through South Philly's Marconi Plaza, I noticed that the leaves which were green the last time I walked through the park were now a lovely orange and red. I started making a mental list of my favorite things about the season.

Autumn Leaves and their Colors

Autumn Wreaths on our Front Doors

A Pumpkin Pie Smoothie
at South Philly FUEL

Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte

October "Post Season" Baseball
(especially if it includes the Phillies)

 Harvest Festivals

Veterans' Day Parades

What's your favorite Autumn feature and activity?

And The Winner Is...

The "Milken Educator Award," considered nation-wide to be the Academy Award of teaching, was awarded on Wednesday to a South Philadelphia, 5th grade Science and Math teacher. Given annually to a total of thirty-five teachers throughout the country, twenty-nine year old, Jayda Pugliese, who teaches at Andrew Jackson Elementary School, assumed that morning she was taking her class to just another weekly assembly.

Instead, the gathering was in her honor! Ms. Pugliese stood on stage with Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Philadelphia School District Superintendent William R. Hite, Jr., PA Education Secretary Pedro A. Rivera, and Lowell Milken, cofounder of the Milken Family Foundation. Ms. Pugliese was presented with a check for $25,000 which she plans to use to complete her doctoral degree.

Congratulations, Ms. Pugliese!

Noise or Silence?

This post is for all of my author friends out you write in silence or do you need some background noise?

For me, if it's baseball season, I'm listening to a Phillies' game on the radio, or analysts discussing a Phillies' game.

If it's not baseball season, I'm listening to Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi (although I live in Philly, I can't get enough of those Jersey boys). I've concluded, over the years, that the radio/CD player is a distraction whenever I hit a snag in my thinking.

So, a question to all of you creative folks, do you need noise or silence?

Great Bundles from Crimson Romance

Two years ago, I had the honor of seeing my novel, Magic Moment, grouped with nine fellow Crimson Romantic Suspense authors in a bundle titled, Running to Love. I say "honor" because the authors I shared the stage with were talented, their novels awesome, and due to the great reviews we received on Amazon and Goodreads our novels were a good fit for each other.

Over time, I've picked up several of Crimson's bundles and noticed how all of the stories complimented each other. Therefore, let me give a "shout-out" to the editorial folks at Crimson for knowing just the right reads to gather for a collection.

Scroll down for information on several recently released Crimson Romance bundles. Give 'em a try, and happy reading!
